Cultural safety in healthcare

Have a read of the discussion paper on Cultural Safety in Australia, written by Janine Mohamed and Kathleen Stacey with Catherine Chamberlain and Naomi Pries.  

Published in August this year by the Lowitja Institute, Australia’s only national Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community-controlled health research institute, the paper explores the importance of cultural safety in Australia, explains key terms and concepts, and the differences in cultural training terms such as cultural awareness, competence and responsiveness.  

The paper also identifies elements of good practice in cultural safety training and proposes recommended and nationally consistent standards, as well as further steps to embed cultural safety across health and human services. We hope you will find this a helpful resource. especially when planning to join any cultural safety training.
