New resources to support Intellectual Disability Health Capability Framework

The ADC has supported the development and ongoing implementation of the Intellectual Disability Health Capability Framework (the Framework). The framework outlines capabilities, learning outcomes and guides for universities and accreditation authorities. It aims to support universities to improve education and training for health students, including those studying oral health, to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes to care for people with intellectual disability.

To support the implantation of the Framework, the ADC has previously published a guidance note for education providers that provides information about how the Framework affects the existing standards and competencies.

We are pleased to share that new education resources are now available for education providers to help teach health students about intellectual disability health.

They include:

• six written case studies and discussion questions that highlight issues from each Framework Capability area, and guidance on developing further resources
• two case study films that aim to educate students on communication, and decision-making and consent when working with people with intellectual disability
• two simulation scenarios with a guide for facilitators
• lecture plans and tutorial activities with a reference book.
• the Co-education toolkit– a guide for educators to work with Lived Experience Educators to improve students’ capabilities in intellectual disability health
• an information sheet on how universities can work with disability organisations to create student placement opportunities.
• example assessment questions for each Framework Capability area.
