PUBLIC SECTOR DENTAL WORKFORCE SCHEME

The Public Sector Dental Workforce Scheme (PSDWS), has been introduced to help alleviate dentist workforce shortages in the public sector, particularly in rural and remote areas.

Under this scheme graduates from some dental programs in Canada, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, South Africa and the US are eligible to participate

For a full list of programs see the List of Accredited Dental Undergraduate Programs Whose Graduates are Eligible to Participate in the Public Sector Dental Workforce Scheme.

Those eligible will be granted an exemption by the ADC from the Preliminary Examination and a form of limited registration with the Dental Board of Australia (http://www.dentalboard.gov.au/) to enable them to practise in the public sector for a period up to 3 years during which time the ADC Final Examination must be undertaken.

For further information contact the Oral Health Division of the Health Department of the State or Territory in which you wish to practise.

Please note that the implementation of this scheme may vary in some details from state to state.

AUSTRALIAN DENTAL COUNCIL REQUIREMENTS

PSDWS candidates have been granted exemption from the ADC’s Preliminary Examination and are required to undertake, and successfully complete, the Final Clinical Examination within three years of their commencement in the Scheme. Candidates should be aware of the following requirements to be met before a PSDWS candidate is allocated a place in the ADC’s Final Clinical Examination.

Assessment

Candidates applying to the ADC for examination under the PSDWS must also apply for initial assessment of their qualifications by the ADC. A fee applies. Candidates will be advised, in writing, of the outcome.

English Language requirements

Candidates applying for a place in the Final Clinical Examination must have completed an accepted English language test - either IELTS or OET - at the required level or have been granted an exemption, before applying for the examination. Applications cannot be accepted unless proof is provided with the application

Fees

Fees must accompany all applications for assessment.

Fees, or an official letter from the PSDWS-sponsoring State or Territory, accepting responsibility for the fee, must accompany applications for the Final Examination.

More information about the English language requirements and the ADC Final Examination can be found on the Assessment of overseas qualified dental practitioners section of this website.
