Review of the Accreditation Standards for dental practitioner programs to start in 2019

Review of the Accreditation Standards for dental practitioner programs to start in 2019

20 June 2019
Accreditation Standards Review

The Australian Dental Council (ADC)/Dental Council (New Zealand) (DC(NZ)) accreditation standards for dental practitioner programs (the Standards) play a pivotal role in the accreditation of dental practitioner programs. Underpinning the accreditation process, they protect the public by making sure education and training programs produce graduates demonstrating the skills, knowledge, and professional competencies needed to register as a dental practitioner in Australia.

To ensure alignment with contemporary benchmarks and expectations, while continuing to focus on public safety, the ADC and DC(NZ) have started a review of the Standards.

As part of the review, we have identified a range of initial focus areas where we may wish to make changes to the Standards. These include:

  • Strengthening the Standards to make sure programs produce graduates who are culturally safe to work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and Māori Peoples.
  • Ensuring consumers are able to provide input into the design and deliver of programs producing future practitioners.
  • Ensuring programs provide students with the opportunity to learn about, from and with other members of the dental team and other professions.

To assist the process, a working party will be established to help consider changes to the existing Standards. Consultation on any proposed changes to the Standards will take place in early 2020.

The review is due to finish in mid-2020, with the revised Standards to take effect from 2021, if required.

We are committed to keeping you up-to-date on the work completed during the review. As we progress, we will provide updates via our website and in our e-newsletter.

Share your thoughts on the current Standards

As part of the initial stages of the review, we are seeking your thoughts on the existing accreditation Standards. This feedback will help us understand how the Standards are working in their current format and if there is a need for their improvement.

We have published a short paper explaining the review and the changes to the Standards we are considering. The paper can be viewed here

You can participate in the survey by clicking here .

Alternatively, you are welcome to email your responses to the following email addresses:

  • For Australian based respondents accreditation@adc.org.au
  • For New Zealand based respondents consultations@dcnz.org.nz

The survey will remain open until 12 August 2019 at 11:59pm AEST

Feedback collected through the survey will help inform the work of the Accreditation Standards review working party. A summary of the responses will be published to the ADC and DC(NZ) websites.
