Overview

The Australian Dental Council (ADC) is inviting applications from dentists and dental specialists with an interest in improving Australian health outcomes to join our Board of Directors.

We have three upcoming vacancies on our Board of Directors. These vacancies are due to the expiring tenure of our existing members. Two positions will become vacant in November 2022, with an additional vacancy to open in February 2023. Two positions are open to dentists or dental specialists. Please note the final position is an identified role for an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander person.

About the vacancies

The Australian Dental Council (ADC) is a values-driven independent, ‘for purpose’ company. We are appointed by the Dental Board of Australia to accredit Australian dental programs and assess the knowledge, clinical skills and professional attributes of overseas trained dental practitioners seeking registration to practice in Australia.

We strive to maintain our position as a leader in accreditation and assessment across Australia, and internationally.

We have three upcoming vacancies on our Board of Directors. Two positions will become vacant in November 2022 and one further position will become vacant in February 2023. These vacancies are due to the expiring tenures of existing Board members. These Directors are not eligible for reappointment.

Selection criteria

Of primary importance to the Board is the values alignment of applicants to the values of the ADC and a willingness to actively contribute to the culture and governance of the organisation.

To be considered for these positions, you will demonstrate the following:

  1. Thorough understanding of governance and fiduciary duties associated with Board Directorship.
  2. Ability to contribute strategic thinking to organisational priorities, risk management and business development and growth.
  3. Well-developed communication and influencing skills, including the ability to build strong networks and professional relationships.
  4. Commitment to the values and strategic priorities of the ADC.

In addition to the above, mandatory criteria for appointment includes:

  1. GAICD or equivalent, or a willingness to complete.
  2. A commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural safety, ideally coupled with an understanding of the critical role of cultural safety in improving public health outcomes.

Across the three vacancies, the Board is looking to ensure a breadth of skill. Experience in one or more of the following will be highly regarded:

  1. Academic experience.
  2. International accreditation experience.
  3. Business development, particularly in international markets.
  4. Finance, risk management and strategic investment portfolio experience.

To meet the requirements of the Board Charter:

  • At least one position must be filled by a dentist or dental specialist (requiring current registration good standing). 
  • At least one position must be filled by a person who identifies as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander. 

The ADC is actively working to ensure diversity in skills, experience and backgrounds of Board members including ensuring representation Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in decision making at the ADC. This means diversity of background, identity, thought, and experience will be important considerations in determining the successful appointees.
