Independent Review of Complexity in the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme

An independent review of the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme (NRAS) started in 2024, with the aim to identify complex or unnecessary processes within the NRAS. The review seeks to improve regulatory outcomes and keep Australians safe by providing high-quality health care.

The review recommendations will:

  • keep in step with community expectations
  • improve how the NRAS makes decisions and manages complaints about health practitioners
  • consider how the NRAS can expand and grow to meet future needs
  • advise on how strategy and direction will be set for the NRAS in the future.

The Review invited submissions based on a consultation paper, which was released in September 2024. The ADC provided feedback on the paper. The review also sought feedback from:

  • governments
  • consumers
  • health professions
  • peak bodies
  • other regulators.

A second consultation paper is expected to be released in early 2025, and a more targeted consultation process will follow. This phase of targeted consultation will assist in developing detailed recommendations for presentation in the final report to health ministers in April 2025.

Unleashing the potential of our workforce – Scope of Practice Review final report

Last year, the ADC attended workshops and provided feedback on the Department of Health and Aged Care’s Scope of Practice Review, which examined the barriers and opportunities health practitioners face working to their full scope of practice in primary care.

Following more than 12 months of consultation and research, in October 2024 the final report was released that proposed 18 recommendations across four themes:

  • workforce design, development, education and planning
  • legislation and regulation
  • funding and payment policy
  • enablers and other key considerations.
